Just weeks after arriving in Guatemala following the eruption of Fuego Volcano, José and the World Central Kitchen team have activated 4 kitchens and 6 food trucks to deliver meals to 30 distribution points within the eruption radius. By partnering with organizations like GenteGas and Vamos Adelante, #ChefsForGuatemala has already ramped up production to serve nearly 13,000 meals per day to those impacted by the eruption – and have now served over 100,000 meals in total.
The devastating eruption of the Fuego Volcano has left 110 dead and hundreds missing. Thousands of families have been forced to flee their homes to avoid the volcano’s fallout. Although shelters have been established, many are run entirely by volunteers and have no established feeding operation. By partnering with local kitchens and food trucks, World Central Kitchen is able to quickly and effectively produce meals and deliver them to shelters.
Last week, José and the team delivered meals to Ceilán, which was directly in the impact radius of the volcano. The team distributed thousands of sandwiches to rescue workers, volunteer doctors, families, and partner organizations. This week, José is back on the ground to support the operation, working with the #ChefsForGuatemala team and volunteers to feed those in need.
The Fuego Volcano remains active and thousands remain without consistent access to quality food. Donate now to help World Central Kitchen purchase ingredients and delivery supplies to expand operations, and follow their work on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for the latest updates. José also regularly posts updates on social media: check him out on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
